Handling Stress in Exam Time

Educators guide to support their students : Dealing with the fear of exams!

Handling Stress in Exam Time

The month of february is usually a dreaded month in the Indian households due to examination scenarios across the country. It takes a toll on the health of the children and the family as well at times. Hence, it is important that we are prepared to deal with our children’s anxiety and exam related stress, especially during exams.

As teachers, our roles are equally crucial in assisting our students in dealing with exam stress as it is for parents. There are some simple ways in which we can help our students in a slightly better way.

Firstly, having a preplanned revision schedule. A dedicated and predecided revision schedule helps in maintaining the pace of learning, along with providing space to students in bringing up their doubts and concerns as they begin revision.

Secondly, providing guidance on time-management techniques, effective mind mapping techniques, and so on for better dealing with the subject content in the exam.

Thirdly, allowing scope for peer discussions and support amongst the students. This not only enhances a child's relationship with his/her peers ,building a sense of community, but also allows better students to understand things in a simpler manner from the peers their age. This practice at times is more effective than the teacher or parent teaching.

Finally, as teachers, our small and pre-planned steps can help students in becoming confident, resilient and motivated towards the assessments of learning, or the dreadful ‘exams’.
